Merton once said, ‘A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all. No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.’
If this statement has any truth to it, then it applies to us all. A life can not be partly spiritual, just as the world in which we live can not be just natural. The duality is, I believe the curse of the greek mindset as interpreted by the minds of the ‘enlightenment thinkers
We all have choice in perpective to take when it comes to our lives, to our decisions, to our treatment of other human beings and of our treatment of creation. We must, see the world as either a spiritual place which has spiritual consequnces, or we must see the world as natural with no spiritual consequences.
If, we are to see resurection change happen in the world we must choose which master we will serve. We will serve either the master of the realm of the natural and thus wait for all to turn to dust. Or, we must serve the realm of the spiritual; believing that all things on earth will be made new. And believing that in fact, it is because of a spiritual realm that the current creative order can be made new.
A world, much like a life, can not serve two masters. Inevitably, we must serve one. Choose this day whom you will serve. The realm of creation or the realm of nature.
Merton said, ‘A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all. No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.’
