Ryder Cup 2008: The Year of the Return- FINAL!!!

Picture 2.png

Well, it's finished. After nine years, the Ryder cup finally returns to US. While there was a new cast of players, one couldn't help but still sense the lingering Tiger. Maybe it was the way in which Anthony Kim (who has modeled himself after Woods for year) won. Maybe it was the fierceness in the screams of Boo Weekley or JB Holmes. Or maybe, just maybe, it was the red shirts that checkered the course on Sunday.

Anyway you look at it, it is a win for the US team. It was an exciting event and, well, its good to be back on top! One can only hope that the Olympics would add golf to their agenda off the back of this kind of energy! Golf, it seems, can be a team sport!

Well done team USA.

Ryder Cup 2008: The Year of the Return- Still Holding

Picture 2.png

Well, the US is still holding its lead. US needs 5 1/2 points to take the cup back. European needs seven points to retain the cup. While I am not 100% sure of Zinger's strategy, I hope it pays off. It looks like he wants to clinch the tournament before he gets to the later rounds!

Today's schedule:
12:03 PM: Kim (USA) vs. Garcia (EUR)
12:14 PM: Mahan (USA) vs. Casey (EUR)
12:25 PM: Leonard (USA) vs. Karlsson (EUR)
12:36 PM: Mickelson (USA) vs. Rose (EUR)
12:47 PM: Perry (USA) vs. Stenson (EUR)
12:58 PM: Weekley (USA) vs. WIlson (EUR)
1:09 PM: Holmes (USA) vs. Hansen (EUR)
1:20 PM: Furyk (USA) vs. Jimenez (EUR)
1:31 PM: Cink (USA) vs. McDowell (EUR)
1:42 PM: Stricker (USA) vs. Poulter (EUR)
1:53 PM: Curtis (USA) vs. Westwood (EUR)
2:04 PM: Campbell vs. Harrington (EUR)

Finish strong!

Ryder Cup 2008: The Year of the Return

Picture 2.png

Today it begins. A little rivalry between the US and the rest of the world in golf called the Ryder Cup.

Over the last 6 years, the European team (plus others) has been victorious; however, the peculiar and distinct absence of Tiger Woods this year will give the team a little extra incentive to be on the top of things.

There are several matches today.

Enjoy...

From Sunday to Monday- Still, Tiger Wins!

Picture 6.png

The US Open is the only championship event which has a 18 hole playoff should the event be tied after the fourth round. Of course, by now, you should have seen Tiger hole this put for birdie to force the playoff today:

After 18 holes (which he holed another birdie on 18 to force the next playoff) another playoff was needed. Tiger won his 14th Major on the first hole of the playoff by making a pretty routine par, and has still yet to be defeated after sharing a lead after 54 holes.

I hope he gets some well deserved rest, and that the pressure he put on his knee this week doesn't cause any long term damage.

ps.
for those of you who come by to read more than just rants about Tiger, thanks for indulging me!

Another Tiger Sunday!

Picture 6.png

After three days of pain and up-and-down play, Tiger Woods is in the lead at the 2008 US Open.

Here is video highlighting the third round. Especially his 'eagles':

As you will see from the video (starting about the 3min mark) he truly has energized the sport. Even if you are not into golf, you will enjoy these clips. And who knows, you might even be converted. But be assured, the road from conversion to good play is a long one!

Finally, we can not forget that Tiger Woods has never lost a major when he has at least a share of the 54-hole lead, and it has been seven years since anyone beat him anywhere in the world when he had the lead to himself.

The guy is tough. The guy is good.

enjoy golf...

Starting tomorrow: US Open 2008

Picture 3.png

Well, tomorrow Tiger is back after knee surgery. The tour has gone on without him, even if in nearly every press conference that happened at events the winner thanked Tiger for not being there. Or, as Kenny Perry did last weekend, he said, 'Tiger, next year I am coming for you!'

Stay tuned for more updates on the US Open.

Go Tiger!

Masters Update

master's header1.png

In case you haven't been following for yourself, Tiger is not playing so great just yet at the Masters. But hey, I am ok with this. Especially when you see that the guy who is leading, South African Trevor Immelmen, has had quite the year!

But I have not given up yet. Tiger always has a few tricks up his sleeve! Like this one from a little while back. Watch the Nike logo!!

wait for it....

Tiger goes two-for-two, Obama for Tuesday!

Tiger Dubai.png

It has already started out as a great year for Tiger. Starting the day at four behind the leader, everyone was wondering...can he do it? The answer came with two holes to play...and the answer was: OF COURSE HE CAN!!!

Tiger Woods shot a back-nine 31 to give him his second victory in as many events in 2008.

MORE Per ESPN:
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Tiger Woods birdied his last two holes Sunday to rally from a four-shot deficit and win the Dubai Desert Classic, starting his season with two victories that looked nothing alike.

One week after winning the Buick Invitational by eight shots, Woods had to birdie five of his last seven holes for a 7-under 65, then wait to see if Ernie Els could catch him. Els needed a birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff, but a wayward tee shot led to bogey.

Woods finished at 14-under 274 and won by one shot over Martin Kaymer of Germany, who finished birdie-birdie-eagle for a 66.

Woods now has won his last four official tournaments, and six of his last seven dating to the Bridgestone Invitational in early August. This is the third time in his career he has started a season with consecutive victories.

For Els, it was a devastating blow.

The South African is in the middle of a three-year plan to become No. 1 in the world, and this looked like the perfect occasion to make a statement. Instead, Els closed with a pedestrian 71 and wound up tied for third at 12-under 276 with Louis Oosthuizen.

oh yeah...now comes Super Tuesday!!!

The PGA Begins!

Picture 1.png

Yesterday, Tiger began his 2008 quest for a Grand Slam of golf. Looks like he will be paired in day two with last year's "mouthy" rival Rory Sabatini.

You can of course, watch the news about the Buick Invitational here.

Could this be the year of the Tiger?

Another Tiger Monday

Yep, that right Tiger Woods has won again.

After trailing on day three by one shot, Tiger Woods came from behind to win at COG Hill, breaking the course record, and the record pace to 60 wins. Yes, with this win, Tiger became the youngest player to win 60. In fact, it has happened so fast, it has even surprised him.

And, well it wasn't like the others played bad. No, as one reporter put it, 'Tiger turns 60 with clinical BMW triumph'.

Well done Tiger. Now finish the thing! Win the FedEx, and pledge to donate the 10 MILLION they plan to pay you when you are 45 (collecting all kinds of growth depending on how you tell them to invest it) to charity!!! Jeez...

golf is good...

I am no Tiger Woods;(

Today i lost. I am finished for the season. I lost in my quater final match play match in the tournament. I have been competing good so far; however, I hav edelveloped a severe case of the 'shanks' which i can not get rid of. Maybe its spiritual;)

The only holes i lost against this 4 handicap were on 'shank' holes. I competed well. I feel good about it.

i could have won..till next season!

Seriously good conversations...

seriously_good_conversations.jpg

Here are a couple of conversations that made me laugh or, that i enjoyed following this week. They are not all funny, just like me;) I did need a little bit of lighter stuff this week as we had two major fundraising events on Friday and Saturday. They were good, but there was quite a bit of busyness going into them.

Enjoy and reflect:
The Tall Skinny on 'Offensive language: I Think My Mother Taught Me'

Josh Brown's honest reflection at 'I'm Back'

Thinking Outside the Bunn's 'memorial tournament's fashion critic'. All I can say is LUCKY!!!!!

Greg Boyd on 'why i hate war'

SmuloSpace's "Questioning the logic of not drinking'.

And last but certainly not least: PrezVid's 'More mouths, more babes'. Wisdom of youth?

What a champion!

tiger.trophy.t1.jpg

Tiger's back on top again for the seventh consecutive time on American soil. Though this time, it wasn't from the beginning!

After starting day three several shots back, Tiger Woods proved he is the man (golf speaking) even when it comes to being behind going into the last day tied for 4th.

In a some what humorous article, this exchange is noted between Tiger, Charles Howell III, and reporters. Don't you love this guy?!

"It's just fun to be there," Woods said. "That's why you bust your butt as hard as you do in practice sessions to get yourself in that position. And when you do, I feel comfortable being there. I've been there enough times."

So he didn't sweat it when his tee shots went into fairway bunkers on hole Nos. 1, 5, 7 and 18.

He showed no fear when he needed to get up and down from greenside bunkers on 14 and 15, with playing partner Charles Howell III filling Woods' rear-view mirror thanks to three birdies in four holes.

Woods all but clinched this thing on the 17th hole, when he hit a five-wood 300 yards down the middle of the fairway, then lifted a nine-iron 143 yards to within three feet of the cup for a birdie putt. That gave him a two-shot lead over Howell.

Howell's on good enough terms with Woods to tease him that he should let someone else win for a change.

"He just sort of gives me that sheepish laugh," Howell said. "Which means, 'No.' "

Howell says he can't even beat Woods during their friendly rounds at Isleworth Country Club in Florida.

In an informal session with reporters, someone wondered whether Woods would ever let Howell win. His tone grew temporarily icy.

"No," Woods said. "Why?"

When it comes to winning golf tournaments, this is who Woods is. This is what he does.

At the end of the day, there were still talk of Tiger's father and his influence on Tiger today. It's simple I think to think that Tiger is still processing the loss of his father. After all, I think we'd all do the same.

But in a small line at the end of the article, there is a hint that Tiger too may be entering into Fatherhood? rumors? Conspiracy? Or just another way for a normal human being to leave his mark on the world in which we live? And maybe, a child, would be an even more lasting mark than all the trophies!

Despite a disappointing team performance during the Ryder muck, Tiger wins 6th in a row. He just keeps winning. What a golfer....!

Sad weekend for the USA...

us_team_092506.jpg

Yes, three in a row. Congrats to the European team...and to all of you who sent me emails or text messages saying, "too bad about the Ryder Cup".

And to think, even the greatest basketball player couldn't even bring the USA team enough luck. Yes, MJ was present at the event. He was walking around with Elin, Tiger's wife.

all in all, i guess we just need to wait a couple more years and see what materializes...

It would be wrong not to cheer American in this case....

tiger-furykblurb092006.jpg

America is taking on Europe. Yeah, sounds familiar. But really, American golfers are taking on Europe. And despite the political overtones, it is really happening over the course of the next weekend on the continent of Europe.

So, if you are an American or a non-european, and you struggle with Americanism in various ways, i actually think golf (along with tennis) is an appropriate sport to cheer americans on to victory. You may have your opinions on war, colonialization, oil, and trade embargos; however, i promise golf is safe. So cheer Tiger and the fellas on! They need it even more now after the last humiliation!

peace for all...

Me, and Tiger

woodstrophy0827.jpg

Well, unlike Tiger Woods who won yet another trophy for his mantle yesterday, I lost the iamjoshbrown competition to Leslie. It was a hard fought attempt, but i was unable to come back from her efforts earlier in the week.

So i had a wierd experience yesterday as i was waiting for the updates on the computer come through..shot by shot, hole by hole. I thought...you know, Tiger is married now. I wonder what married Tiger is like compared to single tiger? I mean, all these years he had family, and millions of others cheering him on. Calling out his name, and now, amid most of the voices, he has Elin, his bride, his wife, his friend. And i wonder, what kind of husband is he? How is his capacity to woo his wife compared to his capacity to hit long drives.

And just as these thoughts were passing through my head, i remembered...Tiger's not so different from me. He has responsibilities, he has passions, he has faith, he has family, he has fears, and he has friends. Sure, he's the greatest gofler in the world, possibly the greatest ever, but when it really comes down to it, I think he'll measure his success not by the amount of trophies on his wall, but by the way he loved those around him. By the way he chose to be husband, father, and friend. I could be wrong, but i think there is that depth to him. I think he's that kind of a guy.

Well done Tiger. And thanks to all of you who tried to help me win. Maybe next time...maybe next time...

Oh, Tiger, My Tiger

Wow, what an event. Tiger woods just won his 11th major championship! Well done. It's his first since being married, his first since his father died, and his first since turning 30. Well done.

I have to make a confession though, I almost cried watching the finale. All the emotion built up in him, just released as he sank the put on 18th. He grabs his caddy, and just starts balling. Then, walks off the green, grabs his wife, and starts crying even harder. For tiger, today was good victory. He played smart. He played almost flawless. He played passionately. He won.

Oh to know that you have done the best you can do, and that when its all over, you can let out whatever emotions you have because those you know and love, know and love you. Not the image or the things you have done, they love you. What a thought of comfort, and hope of many. To be loved for who you are, and to be doing that which you are gifted at doing!

A sad day for a hero

0743222342.01._BO2,20Tigerdilemma.jpg

I've always admired Tiger Woods. One of the world's greatest golfers of all times and arguably one of the worlds most spectacular atheletes. Today, is a sad day for Tiger. In his first tournament after his father's death, Tiger has failed to make the cut in the US Open. What a day.!@#$

What is worse, is that I can only imagine Tiger's desire to call his dad, and talk through the difficulty of missing this cut. I can only imagine his desire to just hear those words of comfort that come from his father. I pray, in a saintly way, his Father does bring him the comfort necessary and he is able to regain his sense of composure for the years to come. Yes, you may be laughing at this point, (if you are insincere and have never lost a really important voice in your life) but a loss so great as his, is nothing to laugh at.

After all, the question posed by author David Owen, in his book The Chosen One: Tiger Woods and the Dilemma of Greatness is effectively, "Was Tiger's dad crazy, or did in fact his father recognize his talent so early and nuture it towards the fullness of its potential?" Isn't that what all fathers ask? "Is this me trying to live through my son, or is this truly the way he (or she for daughters) was created?

Truly, I hope Tiger, and his mother, find peace during such a season of grief and transition.

Finding that authentic swing

B0000508VR.01._SCTHUMBZZZ_.jpg

Anyone who knows me knows that golf is one of my things. I love the sport. The focus, the fresh air, the humiliation, the challenge.

As the new season creeps in upon us here in Switzerland, I am beginning to plan in my practices and games. I have to admit, golf is a lot of work. Yesterday though, was a very good day! Crisp contact, good distance (for a range) and good extension. (if this is boring you, it doesn't get any better) It was almost like i had to hold my breath and enjoy that this was a good day. The bad days will come and i'll forget this good one.

Life it seems is not really any different. We have good days where the sun shines brightly upon us and everything seems to be going right. Then, along comes a tough one where nothing can go right, where everything feels out of sync. The discipline in life and golf is not to let the bad days rob us of the opportunities for finding our authentic swing. We have to press on through them. We have to keep doing life. We have to keep trying to remember in our innermost being that rhythm we had before, which is not lost to us...really, but is waiting again to be discovered. Press on friend, the swing is not gone, its there and it will return!
