Time for some campaignin'

I've posted a few other JibJab funny videos before, but this one is funny no matter who you are for in the US election. Honestly, I was thinking hard about not putting on here, but then I took the below screen shot while watching the video and realized it was more true than I thought.

CampaignMcCain.png

And speaking of funny, how about the ad that rolled up on the cnn site when i was reading about the guy getting arrested for threatening to kill Obama. Ironic where the Obama ad is? But seriously, people are talking about this stuff.

Hope you laugh too..or cry when it comes to the assassination stuff!

Detox Day Three

14402166.JPG

Yep, we are moving right along. In more ways than one I might add.

Today was good with very little discomfort. It was a rough night of sleep, but the waking up to the promise of Kheir, a rice based breakfast pudding with cashews, raisins, cinnamon, and cardoman was a delight. After a little more hydro-therapy and what the book calls "mind work" it turned out to be a heck of day.

Tonight, Laura and I shared a baked sweet potato, falafel, and lemon water. Yeah, I know, pretty basic. But hey, that is the point. Oh, and did I mention I make great Hummus?

Onwards to tomorrow, where nothing really ought to change, except for a return of more energy with the digestive process. Sounds like fun, eh? Right...

detoxingly...

Many of you will have already seen this video of a man on the beach kite surfing as tropical storm Fay came upon shore. I found it somewhat funny that when one of his friends were interviewed, he said, 'we were having a great time, and then this wind just came out of no where!'

Tropical storm? Hurricane? Wind anyone?

Oh, and in case you wondered, there are some crazy people out there in this sport. Here is a bonus video!

5 Reasons to get an iPhone during transition!

So, you absolutely read it right. After saving and lusting and hoping to get an iphone since their inception, I have finally gotten one. And yes, it has lived up to the hype. In fact, during this time of transition, I can think of little else, other than my wife, and my zen-infused Anglican spirituality that has helped me more.

So, here are my: 5 Reasons Why I believe Everyone Needs an iPhone During Major Transition
1. Maps and Directions- When Laura and I were here pre-iPhone, we got really frustrated and lost. Atlanta ain't Geneva. Yep, you read it right, it says ain't; however, that doesn't even remotely diminish the fact that on our next trip, post-iPhone, we have experienced less frustration in transit and shopping.

2. Cuisine Options- I've added the program Loopt to my iPhone. o say the least its good fun. But more than good fun, it helps me find great food and read reviews of them. So, as in tonight, Laura and i wanted a good Indian. So, we jumped on Loopt, searched it out, and found one just down the road. We'll venture there tonight to see if it lives up to our famed Little India. Man I miss those guys!

3. Photos of randomnimity- Sure this may be petty, but if you like snapping photos of randomness, you can also use it do that and actually geo-tag your location. Memories mapped. Kind of reminds me of a great movie that I can not remember if I've ever plugged on this blog: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Must see for couples. Especially those together for more than 3 years. Required for those who've managed more than 10!

4. Knowing where your friends are..when they are few! Laura and I are adjusting and starting a new. YES we deeply miss our friendships in Geneva (more with everyday), but we are also meeting new people here. Many of whom, because of the afford-ability of the iPhone here, are able to have them. With that new program i mentioned above (loopt) we can see where each other are. We can connect if we are close, or even see if we are near someone we know. If so, we can drop a line or text or just give a call and see what's happening. If good!

5. You just feel connected! I have waited for a while to really try to find something that allows me to feel connected to all the apps on my mac. Closest I found recently was my Ipod Touch. But, as you mac enthusiasts would know, there are no phone capabilities there. Yet, with the iPhone I have been more than amazed at the way things just sync together and bring a since of macarmony. You get that: macarmony. You heard it here first: mac + harmony= macarmony.

So, if you know someone who is moving, or if you yourself are making a big transition, make sure you take care of yourself or your loved one, and reach for the iphone. You'll thank yourself, and they will thank you! Trust me.

Macarmoniously...

Good Ol' Georgia!

Well, there are a few reasons to look forward to moving to Georgia. Signs, be they on churches or bars are just one of them. Say the funny one above for instance. You can read the whole story here, including the bit about the below t-shirt for sale which the owner of the store thought was cute, and not racist at all. This is one of the reasons to not look forward to the move!

in case you missed it, 'OJ' is referring to OJ Simpson who was accused and acquitted of killing his wife. However, there is still a large percentage of the American population who believe he did kill her and got away with it.

Happy Birthday, and what a fun weekend!!!

Over the last few days Laura and I have been completing one of the last big events for our time here in Geneva. Taking a group of about 30 around Lake Geneva by bike in support of Voix Libres, we had quite the weekend. If you haven't already, you ought to check them out!

Roughly based on MTV's Road Rules, several teams competed in events as they cycled around the lake together. If you are on Facebook, you can see a host of photos here. If not, sorry.

Also on the weekend, Laura celebrated her birthday! As we reflected on it, it was interesting to think that this will be the last birthday to be celebrated abroad for a while. Sounds sad, but then we began to reflect on the other good bits about celebrating birthdays in America. You know, things like Chucky Cheese Pizza and of course, the proximity of family. Not that the two even remotely compare, but that's kind of the upside.

So, in case you wondered, that's what I've been up to. It has been a great and beautiful weekend here in Geneva. Post this week will include: Thoughts on Service and Farming; My Beautiful Idol: A Book Review; The Indian Taxi Fund: An Update; and other misc posts. Hope this lets you know what to look forward to.

Have a wonderful week!
joshua

ps.
And just in case you wondered, Barack Obama will lose West Virginia and most likely Kentucky as well; however, he has for the first time tied about to take the super delegate lead!

Something sick and something funny

So, I was looking for a video about this crazy story where someone left a dead deer at a petrol station in the US with a sign that read: 'lower gas prices, the humans are taking it out on us'. Pretty sick stuff.

Then, I found this. I'm sorry, but it is funny! And the two guys who did the prank, host a show called, The Man Show. On the whole, not the most wholesome of tv shows. Well, not even really in part. But, when your slot is 3am, what can you expect. Check this out.

So, I was looking for a Coldplay video on YouTube to play along with yesterday's blog post, and I came across a very peculiar version of 'Fix You'. Which Lost Character Are You?

Another reason Detroit is in Trouble

2007-11-22_132218car body.jpg
(ht treehugger.com)

You don't sell as many cars if you build them to last, and it seems that all of the car makers are doing that. In 2000, only 28% of 15 year old cars were still on the road; now 43% are. For Toyota and Honda, it is up to 54%. Dwelling at the bottom are Ladas, with only 5.1% still on the road.

"Never before have we seen such compelling large-scale evidence of improved long-term durability – regardless of nameplate origin, country of manufacture or class of vehicle," said DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

Several factors have contributed to the longer lifespans, including widespread use of galvanized sheet metal, tighter manufacturing fits, better lubricants and electronic fuel injection, DesRosiers said.

According to the Star:

The research results mean more maintenance work for repair shops and an image boost to the used-car business that sells more durable vehicles, according to DesRosiers.

However, he noted that if old autos stay on the road, it will take longer for more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles to make an impact. A new vehicle emits 98 per cent less toxins into the air than a 15-year-old model.

"Keeping these old smokers on the road is definitely not good for the environment," he said.

DesRosiers also criticized lawmakers for focusing on forcing automakers to produce greener vehicles when the real challenge is how to reduce the number of older polluting autos on the road.

Luck
By Mike Mason
(ht to lammert for this article)

"The Lord gives and the Lord takes away;
blessed be the name of the Lord!" 11:21b)

Job's remarkable statement here takes us back to the very primitive (and some would say pagan) concept of chance or luck. Job is basically saying that there is good luck and there is bad luck and that God administrates them both, and not only is it His divine prerogative to do so, but for every one of His seemingly arbitrary decrees He is to be praised. Whether in the casinos of Las Vegas or in the parliaments of the nations, it is God who picks up the roulette ball and places it wherever He will. It is He who shuffles the deck, even if He does not shuffle but rather arranges each card as carefuIly as He numbers the hairs on a head. Whether luck exists at all from God's point of view, is a good question. But from the human standpoint, there is so much of the divine patterning that cannot be understood, that we might as well chalk it up to luck. Why does one person have red hair and another brown? Why is one sick and another well? Why does one die young and another live to see four generations and all without any regard for individual spiritual beliefs? There are no good religious answers to these questions. There is only the nonreligious answer: the luck of the draw.

To believe in God is to accept the nonreligious answer. It is to allow for the fact that the Deity behind the strange and inexplicable facade of this world is a real, living person, and therefore a person with not only rational plans and ideas, but also with nonrational intuitions, feelings, and even whims of His own. To know the Lord in this way is, in some respects, just like knowing anybody else, for in our dealings with other people do we not inevitably run up against a large measure of pure unfathomable irrationality? People could not be people if they were entirely reasonable, and so it is with God. How reasonable is grace? Or love? Many cannot believe in God because they cannot stomach His whims. But to allow the Lord His whimsicalness-and more than that, to bless Him for it is faith.

This topic turns out to be the crux of a good deal of the long debate between Job and his friends. The friends could never have made the statement in 1:21. It would have been too arbitrary, too superstitious for their liking. Good religious people do not believe in luck; they believe in finding reasons for everything. They are always trying to figure out why they are having a bad day, or, why they are sick, or why they are not more happy, or prosperous.

This kind of thinking which forever tries to appease and manipulate the god behind every bush and rock, is a kind of paganism. There is no room for the sheer arbitraryness of the Lord. By contrast, the mind that is able to live with unanswerable questions, letting the roulette ball spin at will see the Lord's hand at work. this is the mind of true faith. This is the faith that can respond, whether in good luck or in bad,

"Amen!"

The moment we start thinking that we can discern some pattern to the ways of the Lord, we begin to draw dangerously close to idolatry. We come to worship the pattern rather than the God behind it. We see patterns everywhere, as in tea leaves, we grow preoccupied with technique rather than relationship. Patterns become molds into which we try and squeeze all of reality, whether it fits, it or not. In modern times the most obvious, example of this is science. Certainly there are patterns in God's universe to be discovered and legitimately exploited; but no pattern can encompass all of reality. When a pattern or system attempts to be all inclusive the result is that it excludes the most vital factor of all: God. This is not to say that God is not rational, only that mere rationality does not completely define His being.

To the ancient Hebrews pure chance, far from being an idea opposed to God, was one of the very things that proclaimed His sovereignty'. Why else would they have cast lots' a device of "urim and Thummim" to discern the Lord’s will? (See Exodus. 28:30)? "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord" (Prov. 1.6:.33). Luck was just one more of the enigmatic channels through which God worked. The mere fact that we are alive at all-is that not lucky? That a loving Heavenly Father has preordained every detail of human lives does not mean that there is any discernible reason why the ball lands on 7 other than 15.

There is much about God that can be known, this is not what the book of Job is about. Job is about the incomprehensible ways of God' and about the praise that is due Him in bad luck as in good.

Refill..Recharge...Reuse!

nopopo_battery.jpg

Thank you Treehugger for this article on 'pee powered' batteries!

Yes, they are available!!

"When we last looked at pee powered batteries, they were still experimental; now they are on the shelves in AA and AAA sizes in Japan. It can be recharged with a variety of liquids including urine and other precious bodily fluids, is supposed to last 10 years, and pumps out 500 milliamp-hours (mAh), which is equivalent to zinc-carbon batteries but a third of what an alkaline does.

Commenter Nick had a good idea in the last post: Imagine a Tesla filled with these. "Pile the family in, hook everyone up, and go. Oh, and cancel the old mantra of every parent, "Go before you go." Now, you'll load the kids up with as much kool aid as possible so that you'll be able to go."

Team Building and famous people...

william mor.jpg

Tonight, as part of a team building exercise, a group of us went to a local pub for a pub quiz. You know, where you get to test your knowledge against everyone else in the place about everything (tonight the topics ranged from horses to rugby, to 'where in the world' to the 80's to magic and superstition). It was a fun night.

Capped by the fact that William Mapother, aka Ethan on Lost, was at the Mr. Pickwick pub in Geneva with us.

It was good fun. He, as many seemed to say, was a 'normal guy'. And by the way, his team did not win!! We had fun despite finishing near the middle and the team was..well...built.

Oh, for life in Geneva. What fun. And what of those we meet along the way. Who knew you could get lost in Geneva. Not I!

Micheal Vick Sued for 63 Billion, Billion!?!#

Laura always keeps me abreast of the good articles found at Good Magazine. This one is pretty funny, sad, and yes, real.

An incarcerated man in South Carolina is suing the alleged canine-killer Michael Vick to the tune of (drum roll), "63,000,000,000 billion dollars," whatever that means. With a comically frivolous figure such as "63,000,000,000 billion" there must be an equally preposterous set of charges to match, right? Ding. The inmate, one Jonathan Lee Riches, alleges that Vick stole two of his pit bulls, used them for fighting, sold them on Ebay, and "used the proceeds to purchase missiles from the Iran government." Why missiles? Because of Vick's alliance with Al Qaeda of course. Hell, we're convinced.

Demanding that the money (remember that by money we mean 63,000,000,000 billion dollars) be backed by "gold and silver" and be delivered directly to the gate of The Williamsburg Federal Correctional facility, Riches implores Vick to "stop physically hurting my feelings and dashing my hopes."

All we have to say is, Vick better pay up.

here are the pages handwritten and filed as such...jeez.

So I am 30...

Please excuse the brief self-indulgence...

While racing around at Serve the City kept me from blogging for a few days, yesterday was blog free as it was my birthday.

Yeah, Yeah you might think, 'how was it that joshua managed to get Al Gore to throw a party on all seven continents for him?' Well, I wonder the same thing. Not to mention in Geneva, there was also a lake party on my birthday (rather scandalous) and an initial celebration for the repeat Americas Cup winner Alinghi (a Swiss boat).

Yes, my birthday was a good one with two parties of friends making it special. With a homemade carrot cake from my wife (who is in Oklahoma now) and a few calls from a few good friends.

And while I am not exactly sure what the next 30 will have for me, I do hope that some how the first thirty will serve as something of a jumping off point. A place to not merely reflect back on, but to work out of. Yeah yeah, isn't all of life that way? Sure, but there is something about, as my dad put it, 'leaving your twenties' that is different. So, off i go into another decade of life. Hoping to live life more fully. Hoping to understand things more clearly. Hoping to choose more wisely. Hoping to be more healthy.

Thanks for staying in touch. I should be back online now for a while.

blessings....

R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S Team Building

Last night I did a pretty ridiculous thing as far as team building goes. And yes Darryl, I am expecting you to comment on this. I went with our team from SPU to a free concert. FREE.

Now free can be good, or it can be bad. As a experience it was great for team life. We laughed, some of us sang, all of us danced, and inevitably, most left shocked that the lead act played merely six songs and that Chris, the other guy in the group, knew them all.

Who you might be asking was this free concert in honor of an American movie day in Brussels? Who was it? Avril Lavigne.

All in all, it was good fun. Here's a sign from a couple of guys who were very excited about the show, and one of the many photos I have of Avril. I was thinking of trying to sell them to a teenie magazine. Any one have any contacts?

Avril You Suck

Avril 1

So how about you? What is the most ridiculous thing you've ever done to build team or community? Can you top a free Avril Lavigne concert?

have a great day!!

Fun for funds...

Not sure if I mentioned it before, but on the first night of our fundraising events last week, there was a surprise item added to the auction. The starting bid was for 220...and it kept going. Finally, by the end of the evening, it was the highest autioned off item of the night, and even became the highest bidded item for both nights...what was it and what did it go for?

The photo says it all....1/2 of my beard for a week for 1080 CHF. Thanks to my board for their faithful support in making this happen...ahem, or should i say, for even suggesting it. Thanks to Conny Vrieling for the rough shave, and to Lammert for the detail work. And to all the people who put in 20 or more to make it happen. Oh the joy.

Rumor has it a video will show up at some point...

enjoy....

Seriously good conversations...

seriously_good_conversations.jpg

Here are a couple of conversations that made me laugh or, that i enjoyed following this week. They are not all funny, just like me;) I did need a little bit of lighter stuff this week as we had two major fundraising events on Friday and Saturday. They were good, but there was quite a bit of busyness going into them.

Enjoy and reflect:
The Tall Skinny on 'Offensive language: I Think My Mother Taught Me'

Josh Brown's honest reflection at 'I'm Back'

Thinking Outside the Bunn's 'memorial tournament's fashion critic'. All I can say is LUCKY!!!!!

Greg Boyd on 'why i hate war'

SmuloSpace's "Questioning the logic of not drinking'.

And last but certainly not least: PrezVid's 'More mouths, more babes'. Wisdom of youth?

A quick bike trip around lake Geneva

Over the course of the last few days, the team at Interyouth, put on a Bike ride around lake Geneva. Lammert was with us as one of the key bikers as was Sebastien and Aaron from Shema. It was good fun.

Over the course of the two days, four teams competed in a Road Rules type event which also enabled them to raise money for a good cause.

There was a blind-folded Kayak race, a giant slip-in' slide, riding in the rain, and a great bbq at the end before more rain set in. Watch this video for some fun photos that sum up the experience pretty well; well, apart from the rain, the broken down support vehicle, and the sunset on lake Geneva. It was a good time and many lessons were learned!

Literary Meme- Just for fun

Thanks Mike. Now I've done it, and well, maybe this will teach us: a quote about a quote!

Here's how it works:
1. Grab the nearest book
2. Open it to page 161
3. Find the fifth full sentence
4. Post the text along with these instructions

"We weren't used to people checking our quotes, we were use to them making them up."

Visitors, friends, and photos oh my!

Over the next few days our friends Nicholas and Leslie are visiting us from the USA.

We met Nicholas and Leslie...well actually, I guess we met them through a few different internet communities we were a part of. Over time, we began ichatting and calling regularly. Now, after having spent New Year's Eve with them in Birmingham Alabama, they are visiting us here in Geneva.

It's great to have them here. The next few days they'll be getting quite an overview of Geneva and getting to spend some good time with us as we go about every day life. Tomorrow we'll spend lots of time with the Vrielings, and the Shema community.

Here are a couple of photos I took today while we were about:

Not sure if it is good...or bad...but its something

Origen.jpg

So i was following up with Paul Mayer's blog after my trip to Kosova, and I came across this 'Which Early Church Father Are You' quiz. As i am trying to relax and rest these next few days, I thought...let's give it a go. And...voila...I am Origen. You can read about him here. And I am still trying to figure out if this is a good thing or not...

So, which one are you?

You’re Origen!

You do nothing by half-measures. If you’re going to read the Bible, you want to read it in the original languages. If you’re going to teach, you’re going to reach as many souls as possible, through a proliferation of lectures and books. If you’re a guy and you’re going to fight for purity … well, you’d better hide the kitchen shears.

Find out which Church Father you are at The Way of the Fathers!

Shema, BBQ, and a new apartment

Well, today was a great day. Not only did we get to experience the fullness of Shema together this evening with the community who gathered, but i had the opportunity to have my first bbq in my own back yard in several years. Actually, my first back yard since marriage. Actually, my first back yard in Europe. Actually, my first back yard...well in a while!

Here are a few photos from today:

The shows we watch...

tvhead.jpg

I am not one who generally blogs about things like 'the shows i watch'; however, I am finding it somewhat inescapeable at this time. Why you ask?

Well, let's start with Seinfeld. My affair with the crew began many many years ago. To this day i have still yet to find a show to match its artistic vision and comedic genius. While i am currently missing the new hit called 'The Office' (US version not UK) i am sure it barely rivals.

Second to Seinfeld was a Northern Exposure. I was first introduced by my original mentor and great friend Morgan Morrow. Morrow has always preserved a great depth of influence in my life. While i did not really understand the show to begin with, he stuck with me. And I stuck with the show. And now...it still amazes me.

Then, after Northern Exposure, came my first married series....Dah dah dah....enter Alias. Yep Jennifer Garner was a 'hot greek chick' (as my friend Olli says) and Laura loved her right away. Her James Bond-like moves and 5'000 USD wigs really captured our hearts. It was only in the last two weeks that we completed the series...yep we finished it...and its over...ahhhh. Good for you Ben...good for you.

And now....Grey's Anatomy. Yeah...its got us. Not like Alias or Seinfeld...but its got us. Gently and warmly with a weird humor and a sense of depth...it has us. We're through season one and almost finished with two. Season three is currently playing....we'll have to wait for the dvds cause we don't get it here en Suisse. But George..what a guy! What a guy!

Maybe our lives were never meant to be so wrapped up in artificial drama. But it seems with us, drama is all around. I often wonder if our lives and actions were recorded if they'd make it to the mainstream media. Probably not...but i guess that's good. But wait...aren't these stories real...you mean...wait...they are not real stories....not real people...not real...

March for Peace- Virtually

button_logo3.gif

I get a newletter that let me know about a virtual and literal 'march for peace' happening today on Washington DC.

Why march? "To demand peace and justice in Iraq and the Middle East. The global partnership Avaaz is working to raise a worldwide voice of solidarity through an international virtual march."

In the words of the organizers, "this could signal the rebirth of the US peace movement. We need to show them the world is on their side. Let's bring our call for peace to the streets of power in Washington."

Apparantly you will be representded as, "Avaaz supporters in Washington have offered to carry real banners and placards at the US demonstration—showing how many internet marchers from all round the world are joining in. We will carry the flag of each country that generates more than 500 internet marchers."

Join the global peace march and tell your friends today!

Holiday season brawls?

bbo.jpg

Well, as we enter the festive time of the year, it only seems appropriate that there are a few family feuds stirring up around the globe. And while some of the feuds are between friends seeking to relevantly discover dialogue in a new way for the good of all, some of the banter is just plain useless...maybe?

For instance, did you know Rosie was being sued by Donald Trump for making fun of his non-firing of Miss USA after her bout with underage drinking and "something" with Miss Teen USA? Yep, and he threatened to send someone after her partner..ouch.

And did you know that a couple of guys at strangers and exiles have tried to provoke yet another fight with the ECM using the thoughts of John MacArthur? And yes, as usual, Josh Brown has taken up his challenge and is ready to start what appears to be something of an old fashioned gang-war?

And did you know that even Tony Campolo wants to use electronic media to "talk back to our Religious Right brothers and sisters"? Won't this be an interesting election season. Obama...obama..obama...

Nope it doesn't sound like the most calming time of the year. But at least some people are trying to down play the violence in the world. Like Andrew Jones who has blogged about his "cruelty-free Christmas feast" which includes ducks, and beef killed humanely, and crabs which were put in the freezer to put them to sleep before placing them in the boiling water. Yes folks, no cruelty here. Just good food and good friends.

And maybe that is what we should all hope and try to be for others...good friends who bring that redemptive sense of the dramatric inbreaking of messanic proportions into the world around us. Sure, it won't look the same in every place; or even simple and joyous in every situation, but as the above blogs represent, the inbreaking of the good news of the good kingdom ought to challenge the systems of our world towards a more redemptive end. What does, rosie have to do with that, I am not real sure...but maybe just maybe, even she, the strangers and exiles, john macarthur, tony campolo, josh brown, the ecm, the sbc, and andrew jones have a role to play. Yes, maybe even you have a role to play. After all, you were named "Time Magazine's Person of the Year!"

Congratulations..i hope you live up to the hype! And may your holidays be filled with great laughter, great tears, and opportunities for God to belong.

Well, with all the debate about Christianity and Islam going on these days (as it has for centuries) I was pointed to this video by Paul Mayers. I am not sure if you will laugh, as I did, or cry...but at least it adds a little child-like humor and outside perspective to the conversation.

Rain, Shema, and Geneva

story sharing.jpg

It's another raining day in Geneva. It just keeps coming. Yesterday showed a little glimmer of hope with a break in the clouds. Alas, such is the entry into the autumn for us.

We will be having our first Shema gathering of the Autumn tonight. We're starting a three part series (i heard that) on the shema. This one is entitled, "shema to the sound". We'll be exploring shema in oral culture; specifically, the evolution of Christianity through oral culture. We'll also be reflecting on the loss of our own oral culture(s) and the effects of this on the way we choose to be formed by the community around us. Is the loss of a true "oral culture" hurting us in the electronic age? Did we lose something of authentic humanity with the print age? Can we regain what was lost in the electronic age? Just a few thoughts.

Yes, should be an interesting evening; especially in light of meeting as if in oral culture (no electronic media or sound, no electronic lighting (we think), nothing which has been mass prodiced through print). Of course, meeting in the Auditiore de Calvin should make it interesting, as it is the ancient space where Jean Calvin and John Knox taught. Quite a bit of oral-towards-print history about this place!

In our next two meetings in October (15, 29), we'll exploring shema in print (letter) and electronic (image) cultures.

I will let you know how it goes....

This is a just for fun creation! Here is the scoop: Josh Brown is having a competition on his website to give away three free banners. I want to win the banners, and so do a few others. One of which is Leslie, a girl i met once in Alabama with her husband Nick at the shape or substance conversation. This video is in repsonse to the one you find on her blog that was posted yesterday. I am not going to give a link to the competition. haha

To help me, before watching the video, click on THIS BUTTON!!!

By the way, the video is silly...you really do not need to watch it!!! It's about six minutes long. Really it took less to to make it, than it will for you to watch it? Go figure..

Alas, the beach...

Laura and I have arrived at the beach in Florida where we will be spending some good time together. We're really excited about the first four days of the trip as we will get that time alone before some of the family comes South. It'll be great to get this time together, and with family!

In other news, I have undergone my annual facial cleansing. Yep, I've shaved off, or down the majority of the facial hair. Always feels cooler when i do that. And with 100+ F days, it is needed! If you are lucky...photos to come!

As a disclaimer as well, whenever i recommend books and movies on this site, it ought to be understood that it doesn't necesarily mean that I endorse all of the teachings or thoughts therein. Just that I trust people's ability to read, reason, and take the good from those things which they read and watch. Please remember this disclaimer, especially as with many blogs, there are readers from all over the world. The diversity thus articulates that those who read from one part of the world will find relevance in some things that those from other parts will not. Oh the crisis of the in between worldliness of global culture.

I am looking forward to doing some blogging and during this vacation. For me, it's part of vacation...writing that is..

A new year of life

Well, its official...happy birthday to me! I find myself in USA for the next few weeks and today, my birthday, has already started early. We left at 4:45am to go to the airport to fly from Kansas City to Birmingham Alabama.

As an aside, there is free wifi in the KC airport, but the hassell of the TSA officials isn't worth it.

For you readers from the other side of the ocean, the flight over went well. We arrived safely and are beginning to get beyond our jet lag! Hopefully, I'll get a little more time to blog in the next few days. If not before, I know I'll be back online on Monday!

As another aside, I was watching tv the other night, and on 4 consecutive channels, there were tv stations that had "you can be a star if the people at home sms your number in to us" shows on. It was very surreal. Very...Also had a couple of interesting laugh out loud expereinces in Walmart. (Yeah, when i return to the US, I often just go walk around walmart to find myself among the culture..then I go to target, still the american culture just a different brand...then I go to the golf course...yet another culture, if you are at private courses;)

Anyway, more to come again in teh next few days. Indeed, these trips to the US have become something to blog about. Amazing the way one sees things when you've been away for 4 years...jeez.

peace and grace to all...joshua c

US-heh?

Well, no one really expected the US to do very well, and well, we proved them correct. Sure, we had a couple of rough games, but in reality, we only scored one goal. I am more convinced that the USA needs to devote an entire generation of Div 1 atheletes to the sport of "soccer" if they are to really make a mark on the world of "futbol". I did hear that there are more children signed up for soccer leagues than little league baseball this year. Maybe the tides of change coming!!

Dare to share??

1130267908PIRATE 2.jpg
So i came across a "Which Action Hero would you be? quiz through Josh Brown's blog that I found quite silly. Especially when you consider what i scored and the fact that i have yet to read one of the books or seen one of the movies about this character. Try it out...see who you are?

I also find it mildly interesting that my number 3 was Lara Croft!

As Jack Sparrow it says the following about me: Roguish,quick-witted, and incredibly lucky, Jack Sparrow is a pirate who sometimes ends up being a hero, against his better judgement. Captain Jack looks out for #1, but he can be counted on (usually) to do the right thing. He has an incredibly persuasive tongue, a mind that borders on genius or insanity, and an incredible talent for getting into trouble and getting out of it. Maybe its brains, maybe its genius, or maybe its just plain luck. Or maybe a mixture of all three.

Not sure i buy it all, but its worth the extra sevens minutes to laugh in the middle of the day! Here are the total of my results:

Captain Jack Sparrow

James Bond, Agent 007

58%

Lara Croft

58%

Indiana Jones

54%

Maximus

50%

Neo, the "One"

46%
